If you’ve browsed through a metaphysical bookstore lately (or an online one), you would have noticed a wide variety of Tarot decks beckoning to be bought. The choice can be overwhelming!
Which one should you buy? If you are a beginner, choose a traditional deck like the Rider-Waite, which I work with in my classes. Most Tarot books refer to the Rider-Waite deck when they give their interpretations, and many modern decks are simply variations of the Rider-Waite theme.
Once you are comfortable with the Rider-Waite deck, you might like to stretch your boundaries and look for a deck that is even more appealing to your taste. Being familiar with the Rider-Waite system means that you can quickly transfer the meanings you have already learnt, and you can build upon that basis through the extra symbols on your new cards.
Even if you are an experienced reader, returning to basics with the Rider-Waite deck can help you find clues to a card’s real meaning. Its colours and symbols have been designed to offer a clear interpretation.
When buying a new deck, check the size of the cards. Some are too large for small hands, making shuffling a chore. But the primary consideration in choosing a new Tarot deck is whether the images and colours appeal to you. It has to be pleasing to the eye, and it must suit your nature; otherwise, you will avoid using it.
Grab a deck of Tarot cards and start shuffling. It’s Tarot Time!
